Switzerland of Ohio Local School District administrators partnered with volunteers on Wednesday, March 18 to package approximately 900 meals for area students. The program provides breakfasts and lunches to all SOLSD students for every day that they are not in school.

Terry Davidson, Food Service Director for The Nutrition Group, said the program is an important one for district students and families. “It’s my first year running this program, but I know a large percentage of our students rely on it when school is out,” he said. “Because we have so many students on reduced lunch, we’re able to provide these meals for every student and get reimbursed by the state.”

Each package contains breakfasts and lunches for the upcoming days. For example, Monday’s package contains two daily meals for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday’s package contains two daily meals for Thursday through Sunday.

The meals are distributed at 14 locations throughout the district. Families can also pick up meals at Woodsfield Elementary every Monday and Thursday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Volunteers and school employees gather on Monday and Thursday mornings to package and deliver that day’s meals. This past week, more than 20 people contributed to the effort across the district, packaging approximately 900 meals.

Mr. Davidson stressed that there are plenty of meals to go around and the district wants families to take advantage of the program. “We don’t want any of our students to go hungry just because school is out,” he said. “You don’t have to register or reserve a meal. Simply show up at a distribution point during pickup hours and you can get a package of meals.”
