Students Raise $1,600 for Rally for Life Fundraiser
Back in September, seven students (ranging from kindergarten to 3rd grade) in Ms. Stacia Vernatter’s class started an incredibly tasty fundraiser – a Sweet Treat Cart! Students sell iced and hot coffee, hot chocolate, sweet tea, hot tea, a variety of snacks, and sometimes homemade baked goods. The funds raised are donated to the Rally for Life Fundraiser, held at Beallsville High School.
At first, the students parked the cart and sold to middle and high school students and staff every Friday afternoon. The cart was such a hit that in January, they started selling their snack foods during elementary lunch every day!
Ms. Vernatter and her classroom aide bought the supplies to get the cart up and running back in September. All of the coffee is donated by the town Convenient Mart, and once or twice a month the class will bake something to sell – sometimes staff members will also bring some baked goods to sell on the cart.
Ms. Vernatter states the fundraiser has been a great experience for her class, teaching them a variety of skills: “Social skills, money management, customer services, manners, baking skills, and it’s teaching them how to give back to the community.” Every week, each student is assigned to a different job. Jobs include pouring and distributing drinks, snacks, handling money/orders, making change for customers, or putting up and taking down the signs.
So far, students have raised $1,600 – and counting!
