River Reading Resources page
If you’ve ever been scrolling through our website, you might have noticed SOLSD offers Reading Resources, a special tab under our Curriculum section. If your student attends Beallsville, Powhatan, River, Skyvue, Woodsfield, or St. Sylvester elementary, you have access to these Reading Resources, which is a way to give parents more information about programs in the district, help their children at home due to our current situation, and give students little fun activities through the Theme Room.
“COVID-19 has put a tremendous amount of pressure on our parents,” explains Ms. Bobbi Jo Johnson, SOLSD literacy coach and content creator for Reading Resources. “Reading Resources is an attempt to alleviate some of that pressure by offering information and activities.”
Reading Resources incorporates themes, some of which are depicted in the photos below. This month’s theme is Valentine, perfect for the upcoming holiday. This month, parents can print the ‘heart words’ that teachers are using in the K-2 classes directly from a link on the Heart Word page. Past themes include Fall, Christmas, and Winter.
Resources include a Book Shelf area, where students have access to hundreds of “read aloud” stories, Symphony Math, Lexia Core5, Keyboarding Without Tears, Think Central, and more. In addition, SOLSD is using Heggerty Phonemic Awareness and Really Great Reading for Phonics.
“In the coming months, I hope to focus on Pre-K resources and how to register for our Pre-K,” states Ms. Johnson. “Usually in March, we have ‘Little Swiss Night’ for those parents with little ones that will be coming to SOLSD. This way, the resources and information will be online.”
